Lyrics of Nick Gardner

Take this book from me and trace over my lines
Dark the view of the ghost on the road and cover my eyes
Heed advice that you got - stop - walk slow and keep to the sides
Keep all that in your head, use it well and see if it applies.

But it hurts when it hurts and without you it's worse,
I can bring my head much further from out the clouds.
But it hurts when it hurts and without you it's worse,
I can bring my head much further from out the clouds.

Light that smoke with a flame and the sailor will die
And the tides they'll roll back and the ocean waters will dry
There's a fear of the beast and the fear that it will get worse
But it won't get worse, I know, it won't get worse.

But it hurts when it hurts and without you it's worse,
I can bring my head much further from out of the clouds.
But it hurts when it hurts and without you it is worse,
I can bring my head much further from out of the clouds.

And I can see you kneeling on the floor and I can hear you testify
And this bitter pill I swallow makes it so damn hard for me to even try.
And I can see you kneeling on the floor and I can hear you testify
And this bitter pill I swallow makes it so damn hard for me to even try.

I said wait, that's not me, just stay and you'll see,
I can bring my head much further from out of the clouds.

From looking at these lyrics i had a few ideas for when we do our music video. Firstly It is quite dreamy as he talks about clouds and smoke a lot, so in the video it would have to be a bit like a dream and not very clear. We could use a smoke machine for this or a foggy day.

Plans for audience research

As the whole reason we are making a digipack and music video is to please our audience and give them what they want. Audience research is an accurate way of knowing what people are looking forHere are a few ideas of how we could gain audience opinions;

Facebook- Facebook is good to get feedback from the audience in many different ways. Firstly you can create pages, adding anything on them. Secondly link the pages on to the news feed which everyone will see, Thirdly message people and set statuses.

Questionnaires

By creating a questionnaire you can ask any questions you want so all the information you get is vital. Secondly you can give it out to whoever you want to ask, so if you have a particular audience this is helpful. It is also very cheap but time consuming. Some people don't have time to them.

Internet

This is good as you can sign up and upload on to you tube for free. Once it is up you can see the whole video. There is a box to place a comment, so if you put a link on Facebook people can click on it and leave feedback. This  is a very accurate way of feedback as people are seeing the actually video.

These would be the things we would consider when taking out audience research;

Age
Interests
Gender
Sexuality
Background
Aspirations

Camera Angles

http://prezi.com/jhtv92ph9rxo/copy-of-camera-angles/

Media terms

Today in lesson we looked at more media Language;

INTERTEXTUALITY

It is when you have two texts together. The way texts refer to other media texts that people can recognise. In our video we could have people coming up to our artists asking to sign the CD so then the audience is aware they have a CD out.

ICONOGRAPHY

A specific or traditional symbolic forms linked with a particular subject. Our artist could be iconic by having a guitar or a cigurette.

STAR IMAGE

An image that is created to the public whether it is actually them or something they are not. It makes them different which makes them more recognizable and famous. Our artists will be recognisable of an Indie artsist.

Pete Doherty

MARKETING

How you  make something know. Firstly finding your target audience through questionnaires, surverys etc. Lastly promoting your product

  • Playlist
  • CD
  • Artists name
  • Photos
  • Lyrics
  • Extra disc
  • Video Disk
  • Cover
  • Back cover
  • Spine
  • Disc cover
  • Legal jargon

Music video theory

1. What is a digipack?

Digipack is a style of compact disc. Usually used for singles or special editions which usually protect the CD better. It includes playlist, name of the artists, photos, cover, back cover, extra video, spine, inlays, lyrics.

2. How intertextuality could be used in the marketing of our video

Intertextuality is a link between two media texts;

Wear t shirts with their names on

3.How intertexuality  could be used in the marketing of your digipack

We could have the CD shown in the video, this would make it recognised and make people realise there is a CD.

4. Goodwins three possible relationships between lyrics and visuals in a music video
  • Illustrating
    amplifying
     contradicting

5.An example of how we could develop star image for your artists using star iconography

    • Link our artist and genre into showing an iconic instrument

6.What demands will the record company make on the video and why? (depending on genre)

    • Close up and performance
    • Put clips into the trailer
    • Music to be categorisable
    • Maintain there image all the time
What usually features in a video in addition to narrative and why?

A performance from the artist

What extras could be in the digipack in addition to video and music tracks?
  • A blackberry bar code on it
  • A little biography the audience can engage with the artist more

Audience members

Jose Vanders

She would be a girl around 15-16 who lives in Cambridge. She would work exceptionally well at school and have a Saturday job in a textiles shop. At the weekends she would like to check out new bands at gigs with her girlfriends. She loves indie music such as Jose Vanders and understated artists. She plans to be a fashion designer and go to a University in either the city London or Cambridge. She has a very vintage style and a very natural look.

The Kooks

He would be a very lively sociable boy who loves going out to parties and especially festivals. He is  18 and currently unemployed as he is enjoying his teens. He is very indie but a bit of a lad when he is out as he likes alcohol especially beer. When he is out he is a bit of a lady's man and always the first one singing, dancing and being loud. He has no particular plans for the future but always hopes he will be popular with both boys and girls.

Ed Sheeran

He would be a A level student studying history, politics, art and business. He is a boy who likes searching unsigned bands and listened to Ed Sheeran before he got famous. He has high aims in his life and would like to be something like a barrister. He is quite strange and very unique, always having different hair styles.

An analysis of an indie music video

The Kooks- Naive

At the beginning of this video it starts off very symbolic of indie videos as it is in the street near a brick wall, a lot of indie artists do this. It starts off very dark and unhappy. The song is about them singing about girls this is also very symbolic. The main focus of the video is of the main singer Luke, he is always very central. He looks very Indie by his clothes and long, scruffy hair. His house looks very basic and simple which helps us to relate to him more as he looks more down to earth. It is a very basic video this may of been because indie artists are quite low budget. He does not get any attention he is just acting like a normal boys in his twenties.

The Kooks- Seaside

This video is done in black and white which i think works really well and would like to do that for our own video. It makes everything seem quite vintage and retro. It then focused in on the main singer playing the guitar, but draws more attention to the guitar because it is in color. This is very symbolic to indie music as they always have a guitar. They are also in the street which is very symbolic to indie music.

Ideas

So far from doing research i have a few favorite ideas. Firstly i would like my actors to be typically indie dressed with indie hair. Secondly the video to be in black and white. Thirdly they need to have a guitar is a nice rural area.

Indie Artists

Indie music is usually performed by men but recently more female indie artists are starting to appear. They are usually quite young ranging from 18 to about 30 years old. They are usually very casual by what they wear and how they have their hair. They stay as themselves and look like they want, they do not get changed into something they are not. They like to wear clothes like skinny jeans, converses, vans, low v neck t shirts. They are usually skinny and like to wear geeky glasses. On the other hand some like to be really casual such as jeans, denim shirt. There hair is usually scruffy and long or they have a unique style that no one else has.

Male;

  • Paolo Nutini
  • The Kooks
  • James Morrison
  • Scouting for girls
  • The script
  • Air Traffic
  • Elbow
  • Editors

A typical female indie artist would be bleached blonde hair usually long and looks knotty and wavy or short usually back combed. They usually have bright red lipstick on with a vintage style fashion. They are usually very artistic in the way they dress themselves or in other ways such as photography, art etc. There appearance is always very unique and each individual has a different style. Most indie artists are very skinny and look quite messy. They like to wear clothes from topshop or places like charity shops. They usually wear things such as leather jackets, lots of weird jewellery, big jumpers, ray bans, leopard print. They usually have quite dark eye make up such as eyeliner, eyeliner and mascara. They usually smoke and drink quite a lot. They usually wear wacky shoes such a Doc Martins or biker sort of boots.

Ideas for music

We were looking on www.unsigned.com for indie/acoustic music. I thought nick Gardner was the best one and Gemma emailed to get permission to use two of his songs which we got;

Nick Gardner- The way it sounds

We have found an artists called Nick Gardner who we all really like. His music is quite pop but a bit indie at the same time. I like how his music makes me feel it is very calming and relaxed. With this song i can imagine it to be outside with the artists on his own.

Nick Gardner- Out of the clouds

This is my favorite out of all of them. i have got a lot of ideas for this piece of music.

Jose Vanders- Faces going places

This song is completly different from the top two. It is very indie and also a woman artists. It could be placed at a train station and i can imagine it in black and white.

Research into the motifs, styles and conventions of a chosen genre

Independent music (indie music)

Indie music is a shortened version of independent music. They are people who are cut off from major record labels, they are people who do it themselves whoa re very low budget.

Indie musics style is a sub genre of alternative rock. It is very diverse with lots of different types within the genre.

Examples of indie music;

The Kooks

Two door cinema club

Kaiserchiefs

The Courteeners

I have noticed with all these bands they are pictured in the streets.

Media language revision

These are some of the terms that i was not familiar with so i am going to learn them as they will be helpful for our video.

Denotation- what is literally in the picture

Connotation- The different interpretations which might be associated with the picture

Puns- Plays on multiple meanings of words

Phonemes- Units of sound, in this context a deliberate misspelling (wot instead of what)

Anchoring- Text or explanation of the image

Indexes- An image that communicates a meaning via a causal link- sweat is an index of heat

Icons- Images communicating information because of its resemblance to what is meant- big Ben is an icon of parliament.

A music video analysis

Lady Gaga- bad romance

From the start of the video Lady Gaga is very central. This attracts more attention towards her. She is wearing a very extravagant costume because it is gold and everyone else is in black and white. It starts with a different music that sounds quite classical which she is controlling. It then zoom's in on a close up of her.

On the second scene it starts off very plain with white sort of boxes. On one of them it says 'monsters' this is advertising her in her own video. Also by saying 'bath of Gaga' this is also advertising her. In the second scene it is hard to spot out Lady Gaga as she looks the same as the rest and doing the same dancing. You can not tell where she is positioned.

Another scene is when she is in a bath tub. Her eyes seem extra big, this could show she is either on drugs or showing her as innocent. She makes is quite personal as her sight line is looking right at the camera. She then gets dragged out the bath which shows she is not in power also when they false her poison down her throat.

There is a close up of her face when she is crying. This makes her seem innocent. After that she goes from being the same as everyone else to stripped down into diamonds. This makes her stand out as she is central. Also after that she has a slow motion of diamonds surrounding her this shows she is rich now.

A music video analysis

Rhianna- Whats my name

The music video whats my name is set in a city, one that looks quite poor. It starts off showing the busyness and fast city. There is yellow cabs in the establishing shot which shoes they are in America.

It is showing Rihanna and Drake doing day to day things such as things normal people would do. This makes them seem more down to earth and helps us to relate to them. She also does washing up which a star would not usually do.

In the first section Rhianna walks into a shop. She is wearing extravagant with bright red hair. This makes her stand out in the grey looking shop.

Rihanna dances throughout the video which is very popular for r&b videos. Which implies she is a fun person.
There is a lot of camera techniques;

  • Establishing shot
  • Close up
  • Extreme close up
  • Panning
Between each section they cut to the next and the cutting rate seems to be quite quick as the song is quite up beat.

Rhianna

Rihanna

Rihanna is an r&b recording artist who as been created as quite an eccentric character. From when she first started to now she has changed a lot. From the top album cover on the right to  the bottom one you can see many changes. Firstly her style and costume, you can tell that she has changed to be more unique. Also her hair has changed from a normal hair color to a crazy color.

Her body language is showing she is an exhibitionist

Task 2 Research and understanding

Lady Gaga

First impression

Lady Gaga is a pop artist who has created an illusion that she is very weird and strange. In her music videos from day one show her as a very unique and eccentric woman. She shows that she is powerful and not afraid to be herself. She is seen as quite an animated character  as she is very made up by her costumes, hair, make up and accessories which makes her different from anyone else.

Costume

She has very strange, weird costumes. They are costumes that no one has ever seen before, very unique. This helps her to be noticed and talked about. When i did research on her concerts her set is amazing, it looks like she has spent a lot of time thinking and working on them to please her audience, this is a small aspect of why her fans love her. Although she wears weird clothes they are also quite short and sexy so her look makes the male population notice her.

Album covers

Here is an example of some of her album covers. There is quite a few album covers that are similar. The image that is given off in the one above is quite scary and powerful. The way her make up is done stands out first as it is very dark around her eyes and her lips are red compared to the black and white theme which gives off a sign of evil. Her expression is of her mouth open and eyes slightly closed makes her look quite evil too.

Album covers

Here is another example of her shown as a different sort of person.  Her body language makes her seem very sexy by the way she has them up and pushing her breasts out. She also is hardly dressed in anything, in one she is covering her breats with her hands and in the other she is covered by newspaper cuttings. This shows her as a sex symbol, firstly the first picture because the red lips and the second because she is being carried by a man and also has red lipstick on.
This shows that she is quite abnormal not a typical pop star like her music sounds. From her body language straight away shows she is confident and wants people to see her as a sex symbol. By the way she is looking at us with her mouth open and hands in her hair shows her to be a bit rebellious.

Task 2 Research and understanding

Eminem

Eminem is a rapper from America. His music is all very the same, although he does do duets with other people of different genres but he always sticks to rap. Throughout his career he has always stayed how he has and not changed for new types of music. Eminem is usually represented as quite serious.

He is not over the top at all, he is very ordinary and does not stand out. His clothes are very normal like boys around his age which may be why people can relate to him more. It seems like his music is so important to him that he feels nothing else matters for example his image. The way he is wearing a tank top showing off his tattoos and his muscles represent him as someone who is a criminal. Eminem is a stereotypical hip hop artist by the way he looks and acts.

This is one of his album covers that i found. From first glance i can see that the whole of the picture is negative and serious. His dress code is very plain and he is wearing a vest top which can show off his muscles and tattoos. By showing his muscles and tattoos makes him come across as quite hard and tough. His body language shows he does not care much as he is slouched and looks scruffy. His facial expression is very dull but he is frowning slightly and his eyes are slightly closed this makes him seem not happy and maybe angry. It looks like he is sitting in a poor place and dangerous as there is blood running down the wall. This makes you think he is injured or he has injured someone else. He takes up most of the area and the background is very plain which draws attention to him.

Eminem's performances are very rare as he retired for a while. His sets are very plain usually with nothing on the stage with him except he has a man who sings with him. This suits his personality and music because if he had a lot of lighting and dances that would not relate to hi music and would not create the right atmosphere. He would always stay in the same casual clothes and would not dance.

Task 2 Research and understanding

Explain the method you used to attract your audience in your As coursework.
To capture my audience in my coursework i had to make choices in camera, editing, mise-en-scene and sound. We were aiming for an audience mostly woman around 20s to 30s so we had to add tecniques so they would show interest.
When i used the camera i did an establishing shot to get an overview, zoomed out shot of where they are. We did this to capture the audience because it does not show to much of what is going but sets the scene so they want to watch on. The other main camera technique that we did was a close up. We did this a few times for example to show who was ringing on his phone and the money in her knickers. This was to give hints of what was going on.
I used a few editing tips on the scene also to add mystery to engage the viewers. We used cross cutting. We did this to show what was happening at the same time for example We wanted the audience to know The woman was getting ready and to assume it was because she knmew about her husband with the prostitute or maybe they did not assume this and was confused so this was engage them to watch on. The main technique we used was dissolving, we used this every shot we did. We used this because we thought that is the scene is unclear they are a a bit unaware of what is going on.
Mise-en-scene was the main technique that we used. We used lots of props such as money to represent she is a prostitute, a phone to show who is ringing, make up to show she is getting ready for something, clothes to show he has changed to go somewhere. The arrangement of the rooms shows who they are, where they are and makes them wonder.
We used non-diagetic sound throughout the opening scene. We had a mysterious sound playing at the beginning and as Lizzie is getitng ready. We picked this as it sound quite creepy nd mysterious. Then we change it when Paddy is with the prostiture, it turns to quite a sexy song.

Dress code analysis (Male)

Dress code analysis

Indie artists are all unique and individual in different ways but also follow the same trends sometimes. They do not follow the normal trends that are in magazines, topman etc they usually get unique bits that are vintage and also follow other trends and take bits from it for example farmer, chav.

Mumford & Sons

Mumford & Sons dress individual in a way of old fashioned,  English country look. They wear a lot of tweed and look quite smart. They wear things such as waistcoats, ties, blazers, cardigans, shirts and braces. There colors are ranges of browns and creams mostly.

Elbow

Elbow are very different from Mumford & Sons as they wear black suits with white shirts with black tie. They are a bit different as one of them wears a black hat. They also wear there suits individually from each other.

The Fray

The fray are quite normal compared to a lot of Indie bands. They wear jeans a lot and dark colors. Also there hair is quite short and tidy.

The kooks

The kooks are very unique. They go for extremes as in skinny jeans, bis and messy hair etc. They all dress differently from each other and do not match at all.

Florence and the machine

Florence and the machine does not have a particular dress code as each time you see her she is wearing something completely different as she does not follow a particular trend.

Kate Nash

Research on similar artists

Mumford & Sons

Mumford & Sons are a British folk band. The instruments in the band are guitar, drums, mandolin, keyboard, accordion, banjo, Dobro, string bass. The band exists of Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane.

Little Lion Man

In this video it starts with an empty stage and having two basic lights hanging from the ceiling. This looks quite effective as it looks a bit deserted and a bit scary also we have a stage at school so could do something similar. Then they use a zoom out and a cross cut to a zoom in on a guitar with him playing it. Afterwards they have a lighting that makes him shadowed but everything else bright. The main focuses of this video is there raw talent and the music as the video is very basic.
The color scheme they have chosen to use is a sort of sepia effect which makes it look quite old which also goes along with there clothing which is quite old fashioned. I like how it is very plain in the background because that focuses your attention on them and kind of makes them seem more down to earth as they are not being extravagant.
As the video plays more lights appear t, this is a very basic effect but works very well as it shadows certain parts well. There are a lot of close ups on the instruments and the hands playing on them.
There are a mixture of cutting rates they are sometimes quick but randomly have long ones.

star theory and your analysis of how a star is constructed

Star theory

In media there is a significant different between a star and somebody who performs music as they have a persona and a uniqueness. Stars  compared to musicians/singers become a certain standard very quickly and easy sometimes by having a famous girlfriend/boyfriend, stories, famous parties etc. If a star wears something new it will then be a new fashion style and everyone will start wearing it just from that star. There are four areas;

Stars as constructions

This is where a star can look very artificial and not real life but they are really real so by doing day to say things helps people relate to them more. They come across as very fake by how magazines, photographs portray them. Stars always have a unique selling point which makes them unique and not like anyone else around, this helps them get notices for example tinie tempah always wears ray bans.

Industry and audience

Stars have to do certain things and look a certain way so the audience are happy and intrigued. Music industries have to make a certain look so they can make money.

Ideology and culture

Character and personality

Theories and conventions

Goodwin theories

He said that there were three possible relationships between lyrics and visuals in a music video which are illustrate, amplifying and contradicting.
